About 80% of websites on the internet are static content websites -
that is sites whose pages are individually designed, one at a time, and
have their own files names for each page.
The Advantages of a Static Content Site:
- The webpages are all individual files that can be saved in a folder on your computer and uploaded to your webspace very easily.
- Because static content sites are made from individual files you can browse through them offline to see how they will look before you upload them.
- Each page can be individually designed to give a less repetitive feel to your site.
- The
site’s pages are kept on your (or your web designer’s) computer as well
as on the live server, which means there is no need to worry about
backing up a database in fear of losing all your content.
The Disadvantages of a Static Content Site:
- The
site will require at least a small amount of HTML and website design
knowledge to update the pages or add further content after the site is
finished, or require further assistance by your web designer whenever
you wish to add to your site.
- Static Content Sites can be difficult to manage if they become very large, consuming a lot of your time in the process.
- Static Content Sites use up more of your webspace than a database driven site would as they get larger.
- Static Content Sites can sometime be a little slower to load than their database driven counterparts.
A Static Content Site is ideal for:
A small to medium site, between 5 and 100 pages, that requires little or no updating once it is finished.
Many
people opt for a Static Content Site with additional areas of live
content such as a message board, order form or shopping cart.
Your
basic site design would be a front page with an introduction to your
business, a second page with more in-depth descriptions, photos of your
business and your work (your digital photos can be taken in York and
around York and Yorkshire for you for a small charge, or we can scan
pictures you provide for free), and a third page with prices, contact
details and possibly a map of your local town or village and how to get
to you.
You may of course require any amount of
additional pages for such things as links to related business and
friends’ websites, or anything else your business offers. If your
business is concerned with tourism for instance you might like to add
information about York, the history of York, how to get to York and
reasons to visit York in the first place.
